How do B-vent fireplaces work?
They feed the fire by pulling air from the room. Then the exhaust is vented vertically through a double-wall metal pipe in your roof. The hot gases rise on their own. Open combustion is also why the flame looks more like a real wood fire than what you see behind sealed glass on a direct vent model.
What is the purpose of the B-vent?
The obvious point is to get dangerous combustion gases out of your house. The double-wall pipe keeps exhaust hot enough to draft upward on its own. It also insulates the surrounding framing from that heat.
Should I choose a B-vent or direct vent fireplace?
